How We Threw The Best. Ever. Australia Day BBQ

Last Thursday we celebrated Australia Day and boy was it fun! This year The Big A and I invited everyone over to celebrate at our place and we had so much fun I had to stop and take a mental picture to remember just how good it was (PS Does anyone else do mental snapshots or is that just me being a dag?!?) The rain stopped just as the BBQ started, the peach bellini's were free flowing and as evening fell we ended up on the street with more drinks and a marathon game of cricket. Even passers by joined in on the fun. For me, the success of this BBQ came by including lots of detail to give the day a special feel, we had a great combination of guests and we kept the party momentum up by introducing activities. What do you do to make your parties a success?

A Mid Century Look That Avoids The Pitfall of Being 'Themey'

One of the challenges of a mid century home is that without the right mix of elements it can get a little 'themey' But when I stumbled upon Marcus Hay's interiors at the very lovely Peacock Feathers I was blown away by the pops of interest that create a bit of tension to the mid century look. The bright colours of the dining room chairs, the amazing two tones of grey walls in the bedroom all they way through to the industrial accents of the bathroom give the home a fresh feel that doesn't go too far into one look. DIY Striped Curtains! Cheap and Easy!

Boldly striped curtains command attention in a room. They are strong, impactful and I love them, but finding striped curtains at a reasonable price is a whole other story. Until now. Lovely Indeed has this ace tutorial on how to create your own striped curtains at next to nothin. Check it out.

"I sewed curtain panels from simple muslin material, and decided how wide I wanted my stripes according to how tall the panels were (this will take a little math on your part). Then, I taped off the areas that I wanted striped. Keep in mind that when the tape is down, some stripes will look wider because you’ll have to allow for the width of the actual tape. I laid the taped panels on a dropcloth (which was actually a dollar store plastic tablecloth) and started painting. The paint I used was a color that we had previously used on our walls, so it was straight-up Benjamin Moore. I mixed in a bit of fabric medium (found at Michael’s Crafts) so that the paint wouldn’t stiffen or crack when it dried. Lots of online tutorials say to use a roller for this part, but I found a paintbrush to be much more effective and just plain faster. Okay, dudes. Now paint. Paint like your life depends on it. I had six panels, and I ended up having to split the painting over a couple of days because the project started taking (waaaay) longer than expected. Let the paint dry a bit and pull off your tape"

Our Super Fun Photo Booth and DIY Back Drop

Making our wedding fun was a PRIORITY for the Big A and I. So one of the best things we did was to have a Photo Booth from the uber talented Jess at In An Instant Photography. To keep with our DIY feel we created a fun photo booth backdrop of kraft paper hearts hanging at different heights. Using the backdrop gave our photos depth and a really fun prop to play with.

7 Year Wedding - A Year in Review Part 2!

We're back for the next installment into what's been happening at 7 Year Wedding this year.  Did you enjoy part 1?  I definetly enjoyed digging through all the articles!  Let's get right into part 2....

In July we looked at turning your sofa into a piece of retro goodness. Our Mid Centurytook their Karlstad Sofa and hacked it into a gorgeous mid century number complete with tufting and retro wooden legs.  It was totes awesome.

7 Year Wedding - A Year in Review Part 1!

My darling readers, it is nearly the end of the year (can you believe that?!?) So I thought I'd do a wrap up of what's been happening this year at 7 Year Wedding.  Lets get started with the first half of the year..... 

In January we took a look at Handmade Weddings, A Fab little book by the clever girls of Sabrina & Eunice of Hello!Lucky and stylist Shauna Faust.  50 projects for DIY goodness for a handmade wedding. 

In February I showed you a little Valentines gift to The Big A - a cute little 'fill it out yourself' book from Etsy goodness seller Cori Kindred

In March I got married!!!!  It was so much fun to be able to share all the joy with you.  

In April we took a look at Maiden Braids which I'd been wanting to do for aaaaaages.

In May we took a look at this seaside chic shack in upstate new york is rented every year by the same couple.It had the most perfect mix of eclectic beachy goodness. 

In June we took a look at Ashely's backyward birthday bash.  It was right up my alley - laid back, easy and a cool community vibe going on.

2 Ways To Decorate Your Lawn At A Garden Wedding

Wedding's always get me when there are unexpected details that just take everything up to the next level. So how about some ideas to get some decoration amazement at the lawn of your garden wedding? There are some really simple ways to make it fun and make it impactful......

When you have an expansive lawn its a great idea to create some detail and fun with a decorative item. How about some oversized lanterns dotted around the lawn? And for extra points, put some lighting inside so as the sun goes down your lanterns are going to put some glow into the lawn.

If you want a simple DIY that will have maximum impact how about an oversized pair of your initials? You could make these from cardboard, foam or wood - paint them to fit with your colour scheme or for some razzle dazzle cover them with glitter.

An Easy Peasy Christmas Gift

I feel so lucky to live where I do. We popped past the Donna Hay store to ooogle at the windows, the green grocer had the most beautiful peonies for sale, a local gallery was doing a Neil Young show and gardens were in full bloom. Curtains - An Easy Peasy Way That Made My House A Home!

Today my darling readers I am going to tell you about one of my failsafe tips on how to make a house a home. I've blogged about it here before but today I have some visuals which is really going to bring it home. So lets get into it! One of the best tricks to make a house a home is to use drapery like curtains to make a space feel done. Here is a pic I took on the weekend of our living room sans drapery. As you can see it looks .... flat! But as soon as I add some really inexpensive IKEA curtains, boom, the room is looking much more finished. Take a tip from Nate Berkus and accentuate height and create a more dramatic feel by hanging your curtain rod as high as you can. If you are stuck on colour, go for a basic neutral like I have and use other elements like pillows or throws to inject more colour - I'm totes digging my grey white and lavender combo at the moment!
